Credit hours are the whole story at college level
High school GPA is usually a straight average across courses that all count the same. College GPA is not. A four-credit course carries four times the weight of a one-credit lab, and once you have a schedule with 1-, 3- and 4-credit courses in it, that asymmetry decides most of your result.
The practical version: your credit-heavy courses are the ones worth protecting. A one-credit elective is nearly noise.
Semester credits and quarter credits are not the same unit
Institutions on a quarter system run three shorter terms a year instead of two longer ones, and their credit hours are correspondingly smaller. The standard conversion is 1 semester credit = 1.5 quarter credits, so a 5-credit quarter course is roughly a 3.33-credit semester course. Mixing the two units in one calculation without converting will silently distort your GPA, and the error is easy to miss because the number still looks plausible. Pick a system in the calculator and stay in it.
Worked example
A 15-credit semester, one course of which is pass/fail:
- Organic Chemistry — B− (2.7) × 4 credits = 10.8
- Organic Chemistry Lab — A (4.0) × 1 credit = 4.0
- Statistics — B+ (3.3) × 3 credits = 9.9
- Political Science — A− (3.7) × 3 credits = 11.1
- Technical Writing — A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12.0
- Physical Education — P, excluded entirely
Total: 47.8 grade points ÷ 14 graded credits = 3.30.
Now look at what each course did. The A in the one-credit lab lifted the GPA by about 0.04. The B− in the four-credit chemistry course pulled it down by about 0.21 — more than five times as much. Same student, same term, and the two courses are not remotely comparable in what they cost. This is the argument for putting your revision hours where the credits are.
Academic standing thresholds
Institutions commonly set good standing at a 2.0 cumulative GPA, academic probation below it, and the Dean's List at 3.5 for a full-time term — often with a minimum credit load attached, typically 12 credits. Those are the usual figures across US institutions. They are not your institution's figures until you have read your institution's catalogue, and schools do vary: some set the Dean's List at 3.25, some at 3.7, some require no incompletes on the record.
The formula
GPA = Σ(pᵢ × cᵢ) ÷ Σcᵢ across graded courses only. Pass/fail, withdrawals, incompletes and audits are excluded from both the numerator and the denominator — they are not zeroes, they are simply not in the average.
Where this stops being reliable
Repeat policies vary more than anything else in this space: grade replacement, grade averaging, and "both attempts on the transcript but only the second counts" all exist, and they produce different GPAs from the same two attempts. Study-abroad and transfer credits often arrive with credit hours but no grade points, changing your credit total without touching your GPA. Non-credit and audit courses do nothing at all. And a few institutions compute cumulative GPA over attempted rather than earned credits, which changes what a withdrawal costs you.
